For centuries, families would save their whole lives to be able to afford a wedding kimono for their daughter's marriage. They would spend tens of thousands of dollars for a wedding kimono that could be worn just once. Giant department stores like Tokyo's Takashimaya still rents them out with an attendant to do the makeup and dressing for around $5000 per wedding. Centuries dedicated to the perfection of weaving, dying and embroidery with precious and semi-precious metals have culminated in the creation of the most exquisite silk work in the world. A couple of decades ago, a famous Japanese actress married in a western wedding gown. That opened the door for western gowns to become the style. It sure was a lot less expensive. Since that time, kimonos have become more and more scarce. The artist Suil has used her brilliant skill and dedication to her craft to take these kimonos and create perfectly symmetrical tapestries from them. All of them are museum quality silk work and are bordered with either antique French or high quality Thai silk. Suil has only produced a few dozen of these over the years. Click on our pictures to view in detail our wonderful collection. These gorgeous and exciting tapestries are used as wall hangings for homes, offices, lobbies, museums or as decorative quilts for bedrooms. |
